I had heard this was the last weekend that The Pig Stand was serving food. We tried to eat dinner last night but they closed early. We headed back today for breakfast. It was the first time for my husband, Dad and me and we were able to make it for the last day. Dad waited in the car since there was a line for people to go in. He noticed that this person in line seemed to be by herself and no one talking to her. I approached, introduced myself to Camille and invited her to join us for breakfast. We had fun picking out music to play from the jukebox. Dad had the Supreme Omelette, my husband had the Chicken Fried Steak, I had the Pig Sandwich Combo and Camille had Biscuits and Gravy. Mary Ann stopped by our table. Her daughter, Donna, was also helping out. Monica was a great server and recognized us from yesterday. It's sad to see a historic restaurant close its doors. 101 years! America's first drive-in and inventor of the onion rings. Thank you for the amazing experience! Mary Ann, we wish you well!
Been wanting to go to this place since we moved to San Antonio. Haven't been in the area but finally was there during the lunch hour so I stopped in! Glad I did! This is probably the closest you can get to a 60's style diner without going back in time! Loved the table side jukeboxes and decor! Ordered the pig sandwich. It was juicy and perfect meat to bread ratio! Cole slaw was mayo based and delicious! Fried okra was crispy and hot! Loved it and will definitely be taking the family sometime for breakfast (served all day). Waitress was super friendly and on her own so she was handling it and did great on response times.
Beginning to look a little run down, definitely needs renovation. Came in with high hopes, a classic diner atmosphere that was nice with fresh baked pies. They had mini jukeboxes at your tables that actually work and they have songs from old to modern. We are in Texas though, please fix the AC, the fans weren't doing a thing. Wait time was a bit lengthy but the server was nice. The food was great, everything tasted fresh. The tomato and onion had a lot of flavor, I got a chicken fried steak sandwich (and they butter the bread!) with gravy on the side. Fries were good but a little small. My dad got chicken breast that looked dry but was actually really good, coleslaw he had was good too. Overall a nice experience, I would wanna come again but probably order to go.
Oldie but goodie! Don't forget about their malt shakes! They are absolutely delicious!!
I love the Pig Stand. Some wonderful memories were made here. The pig sandwich melts in your mouth.Barbecue sauce is the BEST!! So good! A well kept secret . They should consider bottling it for the fans and to keep a part of it going. The staff was always super real with you and was accommodating and kind. Miss.Mary Ann's Pig Stand was a true gem of Broadway and the gateway between midtown and downtown where everyone could get classic diner fare. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. All delicious. You could meet for lunch and place a few songs on the jukebox or find yourself wandering on in for second breakfast on a Friday night and get a scoop of ice cream with pie. Will miss it dearly.
